The Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH) was founded in 1983. It is one of the largest research centers in Greece with well-organized facilities, highly qualified personnel and a reputation as a top-level research institution worldwide.

FORTH conducts specialized scientific research in strategic high-added value sectors, focusing on interdisciplinary research and development (R&D) activities in areas of major scientific, societal and economic interest, such as: Lasers and Photonics, Microelectronics, Advanced Materials / Nanotechnology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Biotechnology, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Precision Medicine, Systems Biology, Robotics, Telecommunications, Applied and Computational Mathematics, Chemical Engineering Sciences, Energy, Environment, Social Sciences & Humanities, Astrophysics and Astronomy.

FORTH comprises ten Research Institutes. Its headquarters and central administration are based in Heraklion, Crete.

FORTH is situated 13 km away from Heraklion International Airport [Airport/city code: HER] and 9.8 km from the city center. During the time of our meeting, Heraklion is connected by numerous nonstop charter flights to a large number of European cities.

The bus schedules to FORTH from downtown Heraklion where most hotels are located can be found via Google Maps and at the following link (bus line number 8). Please note that FORTH is usually referred to as ITE in Greek and by local bus and taxi drivers.

For getting from the airport to the city center, buses depart every 10 minutes and are headed from the airport to Heraklion KTEL terminal near the port. There is also a taxi station outside the arrivals on the left.

Being the largest Greek island, Crete's diverse landscape unfolds with majestic mountain ranges, fertile plains, Mediterranean villages, and inviting beaches. Crete was once home to the Minoan civilization and holds archaeological treasures like the minoan palatial centers of Knossos (in the outskirts of Heraklion) and Phaistos as well as numerous other archeological sites.  The archeological musuem in Heraklion is well worth a visit. Crete is an ideal place to extend your stay for a few days.
